Father Gerry Remie
Fr Remie was a man of vision. His greatest wish was to build a Catholic Secondary College and Youth Centre for Palmerston. He was a very social person who loved cricket (qualified umpire) and AFL football. His education style was that of genuine love and warmth for all young people. Fr Remie was certainly a well loved and respected parish priest; children adored him and flocked to him on every occasion.
When writing about Father Gerry’s fundraising abilities and achievement Father Michael Jackson wrote: “it was so successful that the presbytery, church and school were built and yet, at the time of his death late “99, there was no debt owing and donations kept coming in despite my telling donors that Fr Gerry had passed away”. “Despite Father Michael informing donors that Father Gerry had died, the money kept coming in. From a position of faith, one may consider if that was Father Gerry continuing his efforts from his heavenly home. Many would say it was and we certainly believe that Father Gerry is keeping a very watchful eye over Palmerston, so in retrospect, I now feel that Father Michael’s few words are very important”.
The final mandate of the Risen Christ to the assembled community was “go teach” how to live as people of God
(Matthew 28: 16-20)
