MacKillop Saints Name Strong U16s Squad for NT Schools Championship Opener

The MacKillop Saints U16s boys have unveiled a formidable lineup ahead of their opening clash against Katherine High in the NT Schools Championships, bolstered by the return of several standout performers from the senior ranks.

Following an emphatic showing in the Opens earlier this week, a number of key players will drop back into their age division, adding experience and firepower to an already promising squad.

Headlining the inclusions is dynamic playmaker Timana Roe, who lit up the Opens fixture with a four-try haul. Roe is set to steer the side in the halves alongside Zac Waters, whose composed game management in the older division has drawn praise from coaches and teammates alike.

Captaincy duties will fall to Luke Knight, who returns to the U16s after an influential performance in the Opens. Named at lock, Knight is expected to provide leadership through the middle, while vice-captain Tyler Heikkinen will offer direction and creativity in the backline.

Coach Sharp believes the leadership pairing will play a pivotal role in setting the tone for the campaign.

“Luke leads through his actions,” he said. “He’s tough, composed, and never takes a backward step. That kind of attitude lifts the entire forward pack, especially some of our younger players like Zaiden Smith and Tyler Moore who are still developing.”

Heikkinen’s influence won’t go unnoticed either, according to Sharp.

“He brings a strong understanding of the game and real confidence to the backs. He plays with that trademark Saints edge and will be crucial in how we move the ball.”

The squad also features a mix of established names and emerging talent, including newcomer Isaiah Sayle, who is in line for his debut in Saints colours.

“He’s trained well and been patient,” Sharp said. “Now he gets his opportunity. In a team this competitive, performances matter, and this is his chance to make a statement.”

The Saints will take on Katherine High at MacKillop next Wednesday at 1pm, with students encouraged to get behind the team during the lunch break.
