Saints Juniors Fired Up for Palmerston Cup Showdown

Rugby league rivalry will be at fever pitch this Thursday when the MacKillop Saints boys and girls junior teams run out at Goodline Park to take on Palmerston College in the junior leg of the Palmerston Cup.

After watching the Senior Boys shine with a strong win earlier in the year, the juniors are itching to emulate that success. Both sides have been training hard, and with plenty of fresh faces ready to make their mark, the stage is set for a morning of fierce competition and school pride.

Leading the charge will be Walter Lasker, who once again captains the Saints boys, while the girls will rally behind skipper Ellie Pulman. For many players, it will be their first time pulling on the Saints jersey, including Prakash Matthew and O’Keefe-Murray, both eager to impress with big tournaments looming on the calendar such as the NRL NT 9s and the Taminmin Tri-Series decider for the prestigious Oren Tyler Pewter Jug.

One of the most anticipated storylines surrounds Gabriel Te Maro, making his debut in the halves. A natural competitor with a knack for playmaking, Te Maro has been itching for his chance. “Will he take control and shine, or will we see him pushed back into the forwards?” mused coach Matthew Sharp. “Time will tell, but I like what he brings to the side.”

Sharp believes his squad has the depth to weather any challenge, pointing to his interchange bench as a major asset. “It’s a rare luxury to have players of the calibre of Xavier Geronimo, Caleb Barry, and Zac Waters to inject into the game. That rotation gives us a lot of confidence.”

The girls’ side, meanwhile, will be guided by long-time Saints stalwart Miss Chloe Syme, who is taking the coaching reins for the first time. While the final line-up will be named later this week, Syme’s debut at the helm is already generating plenty of excitement, with the team determined to give her a winning start.

As Thursday approaches, one thing is certain: both Saints squads will leave nothing in the tank when they face off against a strong Palmerston College outfit. With debuts, rivalries, and silverware all on the horizon, the Palmerston Cup junior clashes promise rugby league at its rawest, toughest, and most entertaining.
